Villalvernia (AL), Italy

Basko, Sogegross Group

MANY DIFFERENT NEEDS, JUST ONE SOLUTION

Group companies involved

The project

An excellent selection of fresh foods is what sets Basko apart. And this was the aspect that the Sogegross Group asked us to focus on here in Villalvernia in the province of Alessandria, in preparation for the opening of its 14 th Piedmontese store on 22 July 2021.

Sogegross first worked with the Arneg Group back in 1995. Thanks to a good understanding matured over the years, we gladly accepted the challenge of creating a new store format aimed at presenting a new image and improving usability, using customised displays to convey elegance and a warm welcome.

The agreement led to a turnkey project that involved three of our brands: Arneg for the displays and refrigeration systems, Intrac for the shelving and check-outs, and Incold for the cold rooms.

See the results in this video!

The store measures around 1,300 m 2 , and every inch had to be optimised to display over 15,000 products.

The interior design was optimised down to the smallest detail right from the very first sketches; it mimics industrial-style covered markets with its mock doors and windows, cabinet top panels and advertising graphics.

The sections

The largest area in the store is dedicated to the sale of fresh products, from serve-over counters and self- service displays.

The fruit and veg and wine sections have been thoroughly customised to create quite different environments.

The fish section, the chain’s crown jewel with its gastronomic delights based only on the freshest fish and seafood, the deli section with its cold cuts and cheeses, and the fresh meat section all boast highly characteristic styles thanks to customised windows and cabinet top panels.

The serve-over areas of the deli and meat sections in particular received special attention. The coverings of the refrigerated counter and London hot-case tower feature different colours according to the type of food sold. Colours re-appear on the corresponding Velden LX self-service islands that display pre- packed meat, cold cuts and dairy products. These islands are carefully chosen to optimise floor space thanks to their generous capacity and to combine elegance with excellent performance.

The store's offering is completed by a bread section which also sells patisserie specialities, freshly baked daily in an in-house bakery, as well as perfume, plant and flower, and frozen food sections and a checkout area with staffed and self-scanning counters.

Savings and sustainability with an integrated CO2 refrigeration system

Zero impact supermarkets: this is the objective for commercial refrigeration today.

With this in mind, at Basko we installed an integrated CO2 refrigeration system, eliminating the need to use the HFC coolants that generate a very high greenhouse effect if released into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, on the other hand, is a non-toxic, non-flammable natural refrigerant that has a very low impact on the environment and also guarantees significant energy savings.

It is low-cost, readily available everywhere, and is ideal for use in heat recovery systems for hot water production and heating. The refrigeration system at Villalvernia uses highly efficient plate-type heat exchangers to recover heat that would otherwise be lost to the environment to heat water to 50°C for sanitary and heating purposes. The heat produced is free and can be used for the under-floor heating and air conditioning systems and even for the fan coil units.

The result? A consistent reduction in energy consumption and net savings on gas and electricity bills.

To complete the project, we added an additional plate-type heat exchanger to produce cold water all year round, for use in the store dehumidification and cooling systems.

  • Use of natural, environment-friendly and low-cost refrigerant
  • Hot water, heating, cooling and dehumidification… all from the same system

One supplier means easier management

There’s an obvious advantage in having just one supplier, Arneg in this case, to manage and maintain your refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

If we add remote monitoring and remote control, the result is even better: zero worries! Centralised data management allows us to intervene rapidly in the event of a malfunction and to produce long-term forecasts with positive effects on consumption and maintenance.

Compared to a solution based on separate systems, we also guarantee greater energy efficiency. High performance is ensured by prioritising enclosed refrigerated displays which maintain low temperatures, consume less and respect the environment.

  • Communication is easier with Arneg as sole supplier for the refrigeration and HVAC systems
  • Consumption and maintenance are optimised by remote monitoring and control

In Future

The first step towards global predictivity

The store can be integrated with Arneg BEMS Supervisor, our total energy consulting and consumption supervision service, and with Building Energy Management System, our simple and intuitive online platform for operating lights, managing temperatures, controlling accesses and security systems and optimising consumption remotely through energy control and drastic waste reduction.

Recycling for the circular economy

Finally, let’s talk about recycling. By working with Arneg, Basko can now recycle 96% of the components of its refrigeration system along with all its refrigerated cabinets and counters, with only a minimal percentage of residual waste. All to the benefit of the circular economy!
