The project

We put all our customisation skills to work on behalf of Julius Meinl in Vienna and succeeded in creating a made-to-measure gourmet store. The refrigerated displays were carefully chosen for superior energy performance and were finished by master craftsmen to present the store’s food products in the most attractive way possible. 

Julius Meinl has been a leading player in Viennese coffee since 1862. The brand is a guarantee of quality and its products are served in the most prestigious cafés in Europe and worldwide. The company’s Vienna store occupies a historic building in the heart of the pedestrian area. As the brand’s only flagship store, it sets the highest standards for today’s retail sector.

After thorough renovation, the Julius Meinl store reopened to the public on 22 October 2021. The refurbishment cost a total of 7 million euros and was completed under the guidance of Hamann Architects. Arneg worked on this project in close collaboration with the Viennese refrigeration firm responsible for installing and servicing the refrigerated displays. Though the pandemic forced the various players involved to communicate only by video conference, their close collaboration led to the subsequent reopening proving a great success. Vienna was anxiously awaiting the return of this favourite city centre meeting place.

Anything is possible with customisation

The ideas of the architects were completely realised thanks to the commitment of Arneg and the meticulous adaptation and configuration of the products involved. The sinuous lines seen in the first layout drawings, in the cheese section for example, were achieved using a clever combination of standard modules and 22.5°, 45° and 90° angled modules.

Nearly all our counters were delivered without finishing panels, which were specially made for Julius Meinl by master craftsmen, with whom we worked closely. A good example can be seen in the precious, contrasting black and white marble panels chosen for the meat and fish sections, which are located on separate floors, one directly above the other. The lacquered wood panelling of the dairy section, the natural wood of the fruit and veg section and the original rustic wood adopted for the bakery section are also worth noting. Every section of the store is conceived to present its products in the best possible way, with a pleasant, harmonious choice of colours producing a far brighter and airier look than the space available would otherwise have permitted.

In future

This project was the the result of discussions that began at Euroshop 2020. We completed all necessary work on time in August 2021 despite the fact that the Covid19 epidemic was at its height and world was experiencing severe raw materials shortages.

We are happy to share this success story as it confirms our complete reliability as a project partner. We look forward to our next venture with Julius Meinl and to demonstrating once again our ability to deliver innovative and elegant results.
